For a county that still contains more rolling hills and farmland than city, Leavenworth County is blessed with both quality and quantity in health care services.

The region hosts two public hospitals as well as military facilities that serve its large population of military personnel and their families at Fort Leavenworth, as well as retired veterans. The area also has excellent access to nearby services in other counties.

Saint John Hospital in Leavenworth recently passed its 140th anniversary by announcing a $60-million expansion to replace most of its existing facility with a new, 150-bed medical center. Although plans are still being finalized, the new hospital will nearly double the present facility and be linked to Saint John Medical Plaza. Completion is expected in 2008 or early 2009. The existing hospital, which is licensed for 76 beds, could be used as a nursing home or psychiatric facility after the new hospital is built.

Leavenworth is also home to Cushing Memorial Hospital, a 74-bed hospital located in the center of the city. The 24 hour emergency room is well staffed and is the nearest emergency room for Fort Leavenworth. General laparoscopic and laser surgery are available in addition to the birthing center, skilled nursing, community home health and hospice.

For the more than 5,000 military personnel and their families of Fort Leavenworth, Munson Army Health Center is a prime healthcare site with more than 140,000 patient visits per year. Munson offers a variety of primary care and specialty services, and also is a managed care organization for beneficiaries in the greater Kansas City area.

The Dwight D. Eisenhower Veterans Administration Medical Center in Leavenworth focuses on primary care, psychiatric treatment, and extended care supported by nursing home care units and a domiciliary. The center operates a total of 233 hospital beds.

For members of the public, Leavenworth is also near to surrounding facilities, including the Providence Medical Center in Wyandotte County which has 234 beds and more than 1,300 employees. Providence, like Saint John Hospital, is affiliated with the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Health System.
