Health Care & Community Services

Platte County is well cared for by a variety of health care and human service organizations, providing quality care for traditional health needs, mental health and specialized programs for those with disabilities. The largest health care organization is operated by the Saint Luke's Health System, who's Saint Luke's Northland --Barry Road campus just completed its largest expansion ever. Opened in 1989, the hospital is the Northland's newest acute care hospital with more than 400 physicians and 500 associates on staff. The hospital's recent expansion more than doubled its size and increased the number of licensed beds to 80. The Barry campus is part of the metropolitan-wide Saint Luke's system, which also includes a nearby facility in Smithville.

Platte County also boasts a wide range of health-related human service programs. One of the most significant is the Platte County Health Depart-ment, which operates clinics in both the northern (Platte City) and southern (Riverside) portions of the county. Health department services feature direct care for special needs, such as immunization programs and assistance for women and children. The department also provides widespread public services such as review of food delivery operations. More recently, the department has become involved in a wide range of public safety issues as well.

Platte County's mental health needs are assisted by Tri-County Mental Health Services. Tri-County programs include counseling and medication for individuals, families and groups, as well as preventative services such as substance-abuse prevention. One of Tri-County's most visible programs is Community 2000, which supports teams in most Platte County schools.

Tri-County also utilizes a unique coordinated care provider network for much of its traditional counseling services. Although Tri-County offers counseling at its main facility near Maple Woods Community College, it also contracts with existing providers in Platte County so that residents can find care near to their homes. Two Platte County programs are among the best in Missouri. The Platte County Senior Citizens Service Fund is a tax-supported agency serving Platte County seniors, 60 years and older, since 1994. The Platte County Board of Services provides a wide range of programs for residents with developmental disabilities.
