Platte County is not traditionally considered among the area's top educational regions, but it may host more quality post-secondary institutions that almost any other area in metropolitan Kansas City.

Platte County has at least seven advanced, post-secondary programs, ranging from Park University to satellite programs for several colleges and universities, vocational programs and other special education centers.

With its main campus in Parkville, Park University offers undergraduate and graduate programs. Its hillside campus has grown consistently since its founding in 1875 as a four-year, Christian liberal arts college.

Yet Park also offers a number of surprises. With 34 military campuses, it is the third largest education provider for the military and received an international award recently for "Excellence in Education" to armed services personnel. With other satellite locations in metro Kansas City, Park offers baccalaureate and masters programs throughout this area as well, educating a total of nearly 18,000 students annually.

Its Parkville campus includes a unique, underground library that offers one of the best examples of high-tech learning support. Part of the same network of former underground mines that houses the library is also utilized as the Parkville Commercial Underground, the only underground business complex in Platte County.

Park is only one of Platte County's surprising offerings in post-secondary education, however. From the Northland Career Center to programs held by Central Michigan University, Platte County contains a surprising range of educational choices for area residents.

The Northland Career Center is a factor in Platte education for several reasons. Located on the Platte City R-III High School campus, the center itself offers vocational and technical education for adults as well as traditional high school students. In addition, Baker University offers classes at the center and at Park Hill High School.

Maple Woods Community College and the University of Missouri at Kansas City also offer classes through Platte County's public school districts as part of dual credit programming. Webster University offers classes at the Park Hill Administration Center, near Park Hill High School, while Central Missouri State University last year began a program in aviation mechanical training at the American Airlines Overhaul Base.

Perhaps the biggest stretch is represented by Central Michigan University, which offers graduate certificate and masters programs near KCI. Missouri Western State College, with its main campus in St. Joseph, offers degree completion programs at the Central Michigan satellite campus.
