Clay County Continues to Thrive

Despite seeing moderation in some areas such as residential real estate, Clay County, Mo., is experiencing overall economic development at remarkable levels.

It’s nearly $2 billion in non-residential development was a good place to start. With construction under way or planned in nearly all areas of the region, Clay County is creating a healthy diversity of growth that is generating nearly 3,000 new jobs a year. Although surrounding areas can claim some significant individual developments, Clay County is amassing the kind of broad growth that has raised it to a leading position statewide.

Key elements to Clay County’s success include location, affordability and quality of life. The area’s superb location for transportation and distribution-related industries was responsible for some of its largest recent business additions and expansions. With continued improvement in the transportation network and increased recognition of those advantages, that trend is likely to continue.

Clay County’s affordability and excellent quality of life are equally important. Housing costs and business expenses are in some cases fractions of their counterparts on either coast. At the same time, Clay County’s access to quality education, recreation and entertainment amenities is one of its major strengths.

Perhaps most dramatically, Clay County’s story is only beginning. The area’s extensive open areas bounded by major highways are among the largest of any county bordering downtown Kansas City.
