Work Force Development

For a city of 17,000, Warrensburg can often call on a far larger labor population than would be expected.

A good highway network networked with Johnson County's population of nearly 50,000 is one reason. Rural areas with populations willing to commute are another factor. Some businesses are able to draw on a far larger area that includes some 22 counties within a one-hour drive.

Another aspect of Warrensburg's surprising labor force includes the large number of students at Central Missouri State Univ. Part-time and a surprising number of full-time positions benefit from the 11,500 students.

Formal intern programs and individual student job needs often include full-time and highly qualified positions.

The surprise may be Whiteman AFB. The 6,300 military and civilian personnel in many cases have spouses and family members who swork off-base.

An equally significant factor may be the estimated 3,500 retired military personnel in Johnson County. Because of the military's relatively young retirement age and high training, many of these potential employees are skilled people in their 50s and even 40s.

Census figures show a high level of education for residents in the area and training is readily available. Especially at the university, a wide range of job-skill training is offered for individuals and company groups. At Whiteman, several satellite campuses are open to personnel and community members.

The quality of the area's workforce is rated especially high. Locally described as the "heartland work ethic," this positive job attitude is a factor that company owners and managers appreciate because it translates into high production reduced problems.
