Johnson County Continues to Flourish

There are two problems with pegging Johnson County's growth.

First, the area's often dramatic and always-steady economic expansion makes for a moving target. Second, it covers such a relatively wide area both geographically and in market terms that concise descriptions are difficult and even misleading.

Here are some facts to put Johnson County in perspective: With a population of nearly half a million and growing, Johnson County is second in the Kansas City metropolitan area only to Jackson County. It is the clear leader of the region in almost every economic category. Johnson County in fact generates the kind of economy that many major metropolitan areas would envy.

What is perhaps most significant is that this development is not new. For nearly 30 years, Johnson County has steadily expanded in terms of people and business. Even during periods of national downturn, the area has continued a solid growth by virtually every measurement.

Explaining this growth is more difficult than witnessing it. Johnson County is well positioned locally and nationally to exploit key trans-portation networks and market trends. Area leaders have exhibited a savvy ability to take advantage of these trends by creating a business-friendly environment. Perhaps most of all, the area's growth now generates its own demand that has achieved a sustainable level. With a combination national headquarters and local business-to-business economy, Johnson County's success appears certain to continue.
